Building Capacity for Brain Health Research in Colombia

Empowering Colombia for a Healthier Brain Future
Latin America & Caribbean

Overview

This project aims to enhance brain health research capacity in Colombia by strengthening partnerships with the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá and collaborating with Universidad de Antioquia. Building on existing collaborations, including the Multi-Partner Consortium to Expand Dementia Research in Latin America (ReDLat), this initiative focuses on training in-country experts to advance Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) research, education, and care.

Project Details

This project is a comprehensive initiative focused on understanding and addressing neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, within Colombia. It brings together a network of local and international researchers, clinicians, and community health advocates to support knowledge exchange and capacity building.

Key components of the project include:

  1. Research and Data Collection: Conducting in-depth studies to gather critical data on the prevalence, progression, and impact of neurodegenerative diseases in Colombian populations. This data will be used to identify unique risk factors and develop targeted interventions.
  2. Training and Development: Providing specialized training for Colombian healthcare providers, researchers, and public health professionals to build local expertise. Training programs cover the latest techniques in diagnostics, care practices, and research methodologies to strengthen local capacity in handling neurodegenerative diseases.
  3. Community Engagement and Education: Developing culturally relevant educational resources for patients, families, and caregivers to improve community awareness about brain health. By engaging with local communities, the project aims to reduce stigma and promote early intervention strategies.
  4. Policy and Health System Support: Collaborating with policymakers and health system leaders to integrate findings from the research into health policies and community health strategies. The goal is to create a sustainable model that supports improved health outcomes and equitable care access for individuals impacted by neurodegenerative diseases in Colombia.
  5. Global Collaboration: This project emphasizes a partnership approach, connecting Colombian professionals with global experts to foster collaborative research and share resources. This exchange helps ensure that findings and solutions are not only beneficial locally but also contribute to the global knowledge base on neurodegenerative diseases.

By addressing these areas, the project aims to create a framework that other regions facing similar challenges can adapt, ultimately strengthening the global response to neurodegenerative diseases.
