Vision
To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, we need to empower communities, strengthen the health system, execute targeted research and implement evidence-based preventive and management strategies in response to dementia.
Strategy
Muthoni is working on development of policies and strategies that support the strengthening of the health system in response to an aging population and dementia. This will contribute to the response to their health related needs and improving their quality of health.
Impact
As an Atlantic fellow, Muthoni's purpose is to develop and support the implementation of developed policies in Kenya in response to older people's health including dementia support, care and management.
Motivation
Dementia in Kenya is stigmatised, which contributes to delayed diagnosis. Both the country and health-care system have limited capacity to prevent and manage dementia in the population. There is need to build capacity in response to dementia care.
Muthoni received her medical school training from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. She received a master's degree in gerontology from the University of Southampton, UK in 2018 and Sports and Exercise science from Kenyatta University in 2019. Muthoni works with the Ministry of Health as the head of Division of Geriatric Medicine.
