Raising dementia awareness and education are key factors for reducing the scale and impact of the condition.

Current Work

Sonata is an Associate Professor in Social Policy and Gerontology and Senior Research Fellow at Klaipeda University. She also advises the Lithuanian Ministries of Health Care, Social Protection and Labour, and Education, Science and Sports in the fields of her expertise.

Vision

Sonata in not a health care or medical professional, so raising dementia awareness and education are the key factors for reducing the scale and impact of the condition.

Strategy

Sonata led the team that developed the first national guidance for a postgraduate long-term care program for nursing and social work professionals, approved by the Ministries of Health Care and Social Protection and Labour.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, Sonata aims to develop new policies and practices in her home country of Lithuania to improve long-term care for people living with dementia and their carers.

Motivation

By combining her lived experience, scientific knowledge, and teaching skills, Sonata aims to create dementia-friendly public spaces that support and maintain the independence of people living with dementia.

Education & Experience

Sonata graduated with BSc in Political Science and MSc and Political Science and Public Administration from Klaipeda University, and she received her doctoral degree in Social Sciences (Social Work) from University of Lapland. After completing her master's and doctoral degrees, she joined the Department of Social Work and Health Research and Innovation Centre at Klaipeda University as an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow respectively.
