To reduce the impact of dementia, we need to raise awareness among the general population, invest in research to identify preventable factors and work to develop effective policies and dementia care plans, particularly in low and middle-income countries.
Prekshya is working as a researcher in estimating the community prevalence of dementia in Nepal—a research-led situational analysis for developing a National Dementia Care Plan for the country. She is also educating nursing students in geriatric mental health.
As an Atlantic fellow, Prekshya hopes to be nurtured as a leader and researcher in brain health enabling her to champion dementia research and care, including the development of a National Dementia Care Plan to reduce the impact of dementia in Nepal.
By establishing the baseline data on dementia prevalence and subsequently contributing to the development of an effective National Dementia Care Plan through collaboration, Prekshya aims to promote brain health as well as reduce the burden of dementia in Nepal.
Prekshya received a BSc in Nursing from Purbanchal University, Nepal, and MSc in Psychiatric Nursing from B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Dharan, Nepal with a gold medal. She works as a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatric Nursing at BPKIHS.
