Vision

To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, we need to dedicate more resources to educating people, reducing stigma, and increasing efforts for dementia prevention and care planning.

Strategy

Kate has been studying modifiable risk factors for dementia for over 20 years. Through her work with the Global Brain Health Institute she plans to educate people about the science of dementia and dementia prevention.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, Kate plans to develop a program for effective health communication about dementia risk.

Motivation

The United States has spent billions on Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias research, but fewer dollars have been directed at health education and care planning. Kate aims to raise awareness by sharing her expertise with middle-aged and older individuals to help them reduce their risk.

Education & Experience

Kate received her training in psychiatric epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University and remained on faculty there until 2015. Currently she is a Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
