Ignacio López Barrenechea, MD

Neurologist

Current Work

Coordinator of the Memory Unit of the Neurology Service of the Regional Clinical Hospital of Concepción, Chile. Professional Advisor to the Department of Mental Health of the Concepción Health Service on the subject of Alzheimer's and other dementias.

Vision

By training primary health care professionals, caregivers, and the general public to identify, prevent, and manage dementia, we can foster more supportive communities for individuals living with dementia and their families.

Strategy

Ignacio is a neurologist focused on cognitive neurology. He has worked to implement multidisciplinary teams to support people living with dementia and their families, with an emphasis on the comprehensive management of dementias and the education of caregivers.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, Ignacio seeks to learn about public policies and the experiences of other developing countries that strive to equip families of people with living with dementia with better resources and to enhance the quality of dementia diagnosis and care.

Motivation

By educating people on how to address dementia and its symptoms, Ignacio hopes to create more supportive communities for those with dementia and to empower caregivers to advocate for their needs to decision-makers.

Education & Experience

Ignacio received his medical degree from the San Sebastián University. He then received his neurology degree from the University of Santiago de Chile. During his first year as a neurologist, he participated in the implementation of the National Dementia Plan at the El Carmen Hospital in Maipú and later in the implementation and subsequent coordination of the Memory Unit of the Regional Clinical Hospital of Concepción. He has participated as a teacher in the subject of dementia at the University of Concepción and in training for primary care professionals in its health network.
