Bringing solutions to clinical practice
To fight against dementia around the world, we need to efficiently combine excellence in clinical care with the development of an international research network focused on the discovery and application of novel treatments.
Ignacio is working to validate novel diagnostic tools aiming to increase diagnostic precision and improve our ability to understand how the disease will progress at the single-subject level. This is an essential step toward the development of effective treatments.
As an Atlantic Fellow, Ignacio has started building an international network to sustain his research and the development of a local multidisciplinary clinic. He has learned leadership and grant writing abilities and published research in high impact journals including Brain, Neurology, and Alzheimer's and Dementia.
There is an urgent need to improve public awareness and the diagnosis and management of patients with frontotemporal dementia in Spain.
Ignacio Illán-Gala obtained his Medical Degree and Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. At the end of his internship in Neurology, he joined the Memory Unit of the Sant Pau Hospital, a leading behavioral neurology team where translational research is implemented by a multidisciplinary and highly talented group of scientists, including biologists, psychologists, engineers, nurses, and neurologists. Currently, he is leading the frontotemporal dementia multidisciplinary unit.
