Current Work
As Head of a Stroke Unit in Accra, Ghana, David leads a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing exceptional stroke care. His work also extends to clinical care, research, and advocacy for patients with dementia and movement disorders.

To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, David believes we need a global approach focusing on its preventable causes, starting with cardiovascular disease. This can be achieved by combining public health initiatives, education and individual lifestyle changes.
Strategy
David participates in several dementia awareness programs, targeted at public education and reducing stigma. He is also involved in the READD-ADSP project, a study focused on identifying risk factors for dementia in people of African ancestry.
Impact
As an Atlantic Fellow, David plans to gain knowledge that can be used to improve dementia care in Ghana, and mentor the next generation of Ghanaian neurologists specializing in dementia care.
Motivation
Recognizing the limited number of neurologists, geriatricians and other specialists in Ghana, David works to improve public education on dementia and train dementia care teams, aiming for better diagnosis and treatment
Education & Experience
David Brodie-Mends received his medical training from the University of Ghana medical school. He then completed residencies in both Internal Medicine and Neurology at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana. Dr. Brodie-Mends further specialized in Movement Disorders by undergoing advanced training at Brown University.
He currently heads the Stroke Unit at the Korle-Bu Hospital and is a member of the Alzheimer's Association, the African Dementia Consortium as well as other professional organisations.
