Carolina Bidó, MD

It is crucial to develop population-wide awareness by creating educational and preventive programs focused on dementia risk factors and reducing stigma surrounding the aging population.

Current Work

Carolina is a physician from the Dominican Republic who has been working with her mentor Daisy Acosta, MD, for about 3 years and has been involved in studies such as The Caribbean American Dementia and Aging Study (CADAS) and Latin American Initiative for Lifestyle Intervention to Prevent Cognitive Decline (Latam FINGERS). Currently, she is an Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health at UCSF, where she is gaining new insights to address dementia in her home country.

Vision

To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, it is crucial to develop population-wide awareness by creating educational and preventive programs focused on dementia risk factors and reducing stigma surrounding the aging population.

Strategy

Carolina is currently involved in research focused on the aging population and the epidemiology of dementia. Through this work, she is gaining insights into the most common risk factors for dementia and its impact on families and society.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, Carolina aims to develop innovative solutions in primary care, emphasizing on the prevention of modifiable risk factors. She seeks to involve primary care health workers to enhance dementia awareness in her home country.

Motivation

In the Dominican Republic, dementia is perceived as a natural part of aging; furthermore, raising awareness is crucial.
