Now is the time to make a change in the approach in public health policies and focus on health promotion and prevention.

Current Work

Carlos works as an adult psychiatrist in a high complexity hospital in the south of Chile. He is also a professor of psychopharmacology in several universities in Chile.

Vision

To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, Carlos believes we must promote the development of brain health and dementia prevention programs that help reverse the progressive increase in the prevalence of dementia in low- and middle-income countries.

Strategy

Carlos is actively collaborating to integrate psychogeriatrics into the curriculum for training of specialists in Psychiatry. Additionally, he is developing a Memory Unit at his hospital.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, Carlos aims to develop new health policies in his home country of Chile and enhance medical training regarding brain health, collaborating to reduce the gap regarding medical care in older adult patients.

Motivation

Dementia is a growing problem in Chile due to the aging population and the high rate of cardiovascular diseases and obesity. Now is the time to make a change in the approach in public health policies and focus on health promotion and prevention.

Education & Experience

Carlos Orellana received his medical school training from the University of Chile. He later completed his training in psychiatry at the Universidad Mayor, Chile. He currently works as a Psychiatrist at the "Hospital Las Higueras" in the City of Talcahuano in southern Chile.
