The role of dialysis in the pathogenesis and treatment of dementia
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an increased prevalence of cognitive impairment. In the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study, there was an 11% increase in its prevalence for each 10 mL/min/1.73 m2 decrease in glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. In the haemodialysis (HD) population, the prevalence of cognitive dysfunction approached 70% in one cross-sectional study with lower rates reported for peritoneal dialysis (PD).
