GBHI Annual Conference 2024: Cape Town

The GBHI Annual Conference is a milestone event in the fellowship experience and is an important forum for GBHI community members worldwide to meet and consider new and different perspectives to advance brain health. In 2024, the conference will take place in Cape Town, South Africa. The theme is "Journeys in Partnership."

The program of activities will include the GBHI Annual Conference on May 13-14 and 17 and the co-hosted Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) Satellite Symposium on May 15-16.

This collaborative week will feature panel discussions, poster presentations, breakout sessions, and cultural performances by Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health, GBHI faculty and staff, and special guests.

Audience

Attendance at the conference is by invitation only. In addition to the 2023 cohort of Atlantic Fellows, invited Global Atlantic Fellows, GBHI faculty and staff will attend along with the public audience of the symposium. All other GBHI community members are welcome to attend at their own cost. Please note that participating Atlantic Fellows are required to submit an abstract and prepare a poster presentation.

Goals

Through these gatherings, we aim to provide forums for discussions of the latest findings and challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, to explore emerging dementia research in the region, and to facilitate global networks. The AAIC Satellite Symposium is also a key opportunity to present brain health and dementia-related work to a wide and diverse audience.

We share the following acronym to highlight our goals:

• Reconnect: with fellows, faculty and staff, and support our fellows continued leadership development and opportunities through engagement with the community and context of Cape Town and South Africa. ​
• Strengthen and foster collaborations: with new and existing partners in Cape Town/South Africa, including other Atlantic Programs, academic, arts and community partners. ​
• Advocate: with our partners the Alzheimer's Association for improved brain health and dementia awareness, research and practice.

Location

The annual conference will be based at Southern Sun The Cullinan, 1 Cullinan Street, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, Waterfront, 8002.

The AAIC Satellite Symposium will be held at the Westin Cape Town and online.
